Ball by Ball Live Score Commentary

10.13pm So, that’s the end of that for now. England are through, along with South Africa, who play West Indies in their final group match. Win that, and they are guaranteed to qualify in top spot. Who they face in the semi-finals, all will be revealed in the coming days. From myself and Valkerie, who is bashing out the match report, goodnight!

Heather Knight: “We knew it was going to be a slow wicket, we knew we’d have to be clever, keep it simple, and that’s what we did today. Amy’s had a few low scores so we wanted to change something, and she showed amazing character in her innings. Mady came in because of the conditions, she put in a really good performance. We’ll have to sit down and look at the best line-up for the semi-finals. We knew we’d have to win, we’ve been playing knock-out cricket since the second game.”

Anisa Mohammed speaks in the absence of their injured captain Stafanie Taylor. “One of the things we needed to do right was the fielding, and our energy was good. But I think they got away in the last five overs. One of the things we need to work on is running between the wickets. We are really disappointed, we wanted to go through but it wasn’t to be this year.”

Nat Sciver is Player of the Match: “It’s going nicely, a bit of a different innings today, a bit slower than the wickets we’ve played on, we knew if we ran well and had a batter in at the end it would be easier to get the boundaries. Danni Wyatt’s a great runner. There was a game before us and the score was similar, we had to bat smart.”

10pm Smiles all round from England. They’ve regrouped very well after their shock loss to South Africa in their tournament opener. Nat Sciver was the mainstay in a very professionally compiled total of 143, before the spinners once more soared to the fore, with Sophie Ecclestone’s 3 for 7 the outstanding contribution. India, or the winner of tomorrow’s massive showdown between Australia and New Zealand, awaits…

Raj Melgandi: “Running between the wickets and the art of rotating strike makes the difference between AUS/ENG and rest teams .”

Calitha: “Well, I think that’s England’s spin bowlers sorted for the next decade or so.” Can’t argue with that … Ecclesone, Glenn and Villiers have a combined age of 61!

17.1 W Ecclestone to Mohammed all over! Ecclestone finds the perfect combination of flight and bite to peg back off stump, and book England’s place in the last four! Mohammed swipes all round her stroke, and that’s an ignominious exit for the 2016 champions OUT
A Mohammed b Ecclestone 5 (3b 1×4 0x6) SR: 166.66
End of Over No.17 West Indies Women 97/8 Last Over (13 runs)
16.6 1 Villiers to Mohammed pulls another long-hop past the stretching Glenn at backward square. That’s the offie’s work done, her influence was far more telling than her figures suggest 1 run
16.5 4 Villiers to Mohammed thumped on the up over the covers! Defiance at the last! FOUR

Taylor won’t bat again, so just the one more wicket. A hat-trick of run-outs anyone?

16.4 W Villiers to Alleyne short from Villiers, a bit of a rank long-hop to be fair, but Alleyne can’t get her sweep past short fine leg, but sets off for a suicidal single anyway! Villiers gathers again, breaks the stumps again, and all but seals England’s semi-final berth! OUT
AA Alleyne run out 10 (7b 2×4 0x6) SR: 142.85

Anisa Mohammad enters the fray

Abhijato: “Sent in a prediction at the start of the innings saying England will win. They indeed are going to. Looking forward to seeing them in the knockouts, they tend to turn into a different team under pressure …” Until they face Australia, of course…

16.3 W Villiers to Fletcher bashed hard into the covers, and this is going to be a very simple run out! Villiers gathers the shy and whips off the bails with Fletcher nowhere to be seen. The umpire sends it upstairs to be sure, but that was curtains OUT
ASS Fletcher run out 0 (3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00
16.2 1 Villiers to Alleyne tip and run, another single to the cause 1 run
16.1 4 Villiers to Alleyne well, that’s a tidy strike! Down on one knee, reaching the wide line with an ambitious uppercut of a straight drive, over the bowler’s head FOUR
16.1 3 Villiers to Alleyne whoops, off-line once again from Villiers, and Jones can’t gather down the leg side 3 wides
End of Over No.16 West Indies Women 84/6 Last Over (5 runs)
15.6 0 Ecclestone to Fletcher wafted into the covers, It’s all over bar the slogging now no run
15.5 0 Ecclestone to Fletcher battered into the off side no run
15.4 W Ecclestone to Cooper off come the bails and out goes Cooper! An ambitious wipe, dragged out of her crease on the slog, and Jones’ fast hands do the rest, after the ball misses leg stump by a whisker OUT
B Cooper st †Jones b Ecclestone 15 (16b 2×4 0x6) SR: 93.75
15.3 1 Ecclestone to Alleyne huge appeal for lbw, missing leg, but the single is a risky one, and Ecclestone nearly relay-shies into the timbers 1 leg bye
15.2 0 Ecclestone to Alleyne fully forward, worked to the on-side no run
15.1 4 Ecclestone to Alleyne swept behind square as Ecclestone loses her line on her return to the attack. A flurry of boundaries to lift Windies’ fading morale FOUR
End of Over No.15 West Indies Women 79/5 Last Over (11 runs)

Taylor will not be coming back out to bat, as she goes for scans after her injury earlier in the innings

14.6 1 Shrubsole to Alleyne driven into the covers for another single 1 run
14.5 1 Shrubsole to Cooper tapped to short cover, and this time Cooper does give her ankle some work, setting off at a sprint before remembering she needs to hobble 1 run
14.4 4 Shrubsole to Cooper launched over backward square! That’s a supreme strike, down on one knee, using the angle on a full length from Shrubsole, and powered to the rope! FOUR
14.3 0 Shrubsole to Cooper open-faced push into the covers no run
14.3 1 Shrubsole to Cooper fired past the leg stump, and a deflection off Jones’s gloves to short backward square 1 wide
14.2 4 Shrubsole to Cooper outside off, a touch of width and a bit of pace on the ball, an open-faced flick through third man. Cooper has no need to work her dodgy ankle for that one! FOUR

Mayank: “Hitting sixes when all is lost and no pressure is there. Sums up Windies ladies this worldcup” To be fair, it’s a tactic that their men used to good effect too. Just ask Ben Stokes!

14.1 W Shrubsole to Kirby another top-edged pull! And this time no mistake in the deep! Kirby can’t get the legs on this launch to leg, and Sciver makes amends for her earlier drop with a comfortable take, ten yards in from the rope OUT
LAGL Kirby c Sciver b Shrubsole 20 (15b 1×4 2×6) SR: 133.33
End of Over No.14 West Indies Women 68/4 Last Over (10 runs)
13.6 1 Villiers to Kirby hauled to the leg-side with a flat-batted mow… a better over for West Indies, but more luck than judgement! 1 run
13.5 6 Villiers to Kirby dropped for six at long-on! Brunt was right back on the rope, seemed to have it all in control, but Kirby’s wild slap through the line had more heat on it than she’d envisaged! SIX
13.4 1 Villiers to Cooper wide line from Villiers, forcing Cooper to use her feet to reach it, sensible bowling, cut to point 1 run
13.3 1 Villiers to Kirby pumped to long-on once more 1 run
13.2 1 Villiers to Cooper Cooper clearly can’t put much weight on that ankle, out comes the long handle to deep cover, singles will be at a premium here. 1 run
13.1 0 Villiers to Cooper outside off, Jones whips off the bails no run
End of Over No.13 West Indies Women 58/4 Last Over (9 runs)
12.6 1 Glenn to Cooper thumped to long-on on the bounce. Should have been Glenn’s third wicket to complete another fine spell, but 2 for 16 ain’t at all bad! 1 run
12.5 1 Glenn to Kirby dropped by Sciver! That’s so unjust, brave bowling from Glenn, giving it oodles of air once more, a steepling chance to square leg off a leading edge, but Sciver loses it in the floodlights 1 run
12.4 6 Glenn to Kirby no argument about that one! Finally, one right in Kirby’s arc, a flowing, sumptuous honk over long-on! SIX
