Ball by Ball Live Score Commentary

10.37pm That’s that then from Indore. India go 1-0 up in the series with an emphatic performance from just about everybody that pulled on the India blue today. The series gets decided in three days’ time in Pune, and we hope you will join us for that. Fidel’s report will be around on the site soon, and Deivarayan Muthu’s analysis from Indore should follow soon after. For the moment, from Chandan Duorah, Shashank Kishore and the rest of us at ESPNcricinfo, this is Debayan Sen saying goodnight and goodbye!

Varun: “When anyone says that India should experiment than to win matches…. It reminds me of pre-2007 world cup phase under Greg when we were changing the team and the batting order left and right. Didn’t go so well then”

Navdeep Saini is the Man of the Match! Speaks to Kartik: “I was back in the T20 team after such a long time, that’s why I felt quite confident and eager. (On thinking in T20) The first thing is to be confident, and only then can you bring in variations. (More satisfactory wicket) I liked the yorker better because I nailed it better than expectations. (On how he sees himself as a bowler, whether in white-ball cricket or red-ball) I play both, and hence the more I play, the better I will get at them. (Pace) When I made my T20 debut, all I thought of was pace. But as I have played more, I have realised that variations are important too.”

Virat Kohli: “This was a clinical performance, and that’s how we want to build on each series. We have ticked a few more boxes this time. Brilliant from Navdeep. He has done well in ODI cricket, and he’s bowling well in T20s, with experienced guys like Jasprit, Bhuvi and Shardul. It’s a really good sign for the team. It’s good to have Jasprit back again. He was really keen to bowl again, and his pace was up again. We have to choose who will be our best skills. I think there’ll be one player who will be a surprise package. Prasidh Krishna is someone who has bowled really well in domestic cricket. (On picking Washington Sundar ahead of Jadeja) I think they have a lot of left-handers, and the idea was about match-ups. We need balance, and you need more than five bowlers in T20 cricket. It was a really good surface, and we pulled things back really well. We kept picking wickets, and we didn’t let them to 170-175, which I thought would have been a par score. (On choice of number three) The thought process is simple – we need to see guys step up, win matches under pressure. Me going in at 4 helps us too, like I did at Wankhede [against West Indies]. At the same time, give young players a chance.”

Lasith Malinga: “I thought we were lacking by about 25 runs. We were looking at 160 or so. The bowlers did a good job of sticking to their job. (On Udana) I think he’s our main bowler, and just before bowling, he got injured. He’s getting better, and let’s see how he goes before that match. (Other players) We need to give opportunities to them. We know how experienced he [Angelo Mathews] is. We need the young players also to get into a winning way.”

10.23pm The presentation is up next.

Paras Dua: “While largely a complete performance, India needs to really challenge itself – bat first and defend targets on flat decks, or assume they need to chase the score down in 15 overs. Risk of not experiment is much higher than risk of losing as preparation for world cup.” — Agree, but still a few games to go. I am sure they are looking to seal their best possible squad first of all

karthik : “Can anyone tell me why didn’t Malinga gave an over to Udana. Is he considering him as a batsman?? Hoping this will be answered ” — Udana’s had so many questions asked about him today, I suspect RCB fans outnumber those of the Sri Lankan team. He injured himself while fielding, during just the fourth over, unfortunately. That was the issue with him. Hopefully, he will recover in time for the series decider in Pune on January 10

Galvin Dhaliwal: “Shreyas showing time and time again on how poor the selectors were in picking the number 4 batsman going into the World Cup!”

KL Rahul talks to Murali Kartik: “We’ve been away from the game for a little time, and wanted to get some game time. We were able to play the way we did because of our bowlers. It was probably a 170/180 wicket, and the bowlers did really well. I have just been getting runs, and building my innings well. I’ve been getting runs, playing out in the middle, and that’s been good. (On opening partners, Rohit and Dhawan) I don’t think there’s anything different. We all go out there with a simple plan – to win games for our country. Rohit just makes batting look so damn easy. Shikhar and I have opened together from the time I started my Test career. We have a job to do and we try to do it to the best of our ability.”

There are athletes who have won more medals and accolades than her. There are athletes who are more popular than her. But no one has made a bigger impact, won a tougher battle, taken a firmer stand than her. Dutee Chand. ESPN India’s Icon of the decade.

Navjot S Bhatia: “Navdeep Saini for MoM” — Could be a tough choice, but his spell was quite something. Agreed. In fact, all bowlers picked wickets, and all the batsmen got some runs. Pant got a stumping, and even Dube took a catch! One of those days where you cannot complain about anything

10.10pm India get 2020 off in some style. A complete performance in many ways, right from the toss that they won and inserted Sri Lanka. A good effort from all the bowlers took them to a position from where it seemed unlikely to have any result other than an Indian win. That was backed up with some good contributions from every member of the top four

17.3 6 Kumara to Kohli ooh, finished in style! Kohli gets inside the line of a short ball, and then whips it on one leg over the long leg fence. Meeting fire with fire, in every respect. Punches gloves with the non-striker, and now acknowledges the congratulations from the opposition players SIX
17.2 1 Kumara to Pant greets him with a shortish ball, but not enough to go around his shoulder. Pant wafts it away, across the line, towards deep square leg 1 run

Slip comes in for Pant

AG: “@Ram – hold your horses, we have only seen him smack spinners out of the park, will be interesting how he fares against the likes of Starc and Cummins.. big fan BTW! ”

Pant in next

17.1 W Kumara to Iyer gets his man with a short ball! Smart bowling, as he digs this in short, but leaves it outside off, inviting Iyer to take him on. This was always going to be difficult to control, especially with the kind of pace Kumara generates, and that takes it to deep square leg’s safe hands OUT
SS Iyer c Shanaka b Kumara 34 (26b 3×4 1×6) SR: 130.76

Kumara again

End of Over No.17 India 137/2 Last Over (16 runs)

Ragha: “Malinga to Kohli reminds me of some good old match in Aus. That was the beginning of the Kohli Mania.”

16.6 1 Malinga to Iyer slower ball, and he goes back and drives this towards deep mid-wicket 1 run

15 off this already. In the meantime, Kohli has reached 1000 runs as T20I captain

16.5 1 Malinga to Kohli fuller ball, and driven towards deep mid-wicket 1 run
16.4 2 Malinga to Kohli whips a fuller ball around middle disdainfully towards the deep mid-wicket fence. Two runs on offer 2 runs
16.3 6 Malinga to Kohli ooh, smacks a short ball over the long leg fence! Don’t think he was in complete control, but he knew the fielder was much squarer, and hence made no effort to keep it down SIX

Ram: “What a player Iyer is turning about to be? He playing a perfect partner to Kohli in chasing totals and that gives the captain a lot of confidence to chase any total. ”

16.2 2 Malinga to Kohli short, and he rocks back and swings this hard towards deep square leg. Gunathilaka gets down low to his left and cuts this off and saves two for his team 2 runs
16.1 4 Malinga to Kohli slower ball, around leg stump, and he runs it down towards fine leg. Just a little nudge, and it keeps it to the right of short fine leg FOUR

DanielAlexander: “Tight bowling by SL, couple of wickets here will make it interesting. Malinga has taken 4 in 4 twice in Internationals ”

End of Over No.16 India 121/2 Last Over (17 runs)
15.6 6 PWH de Silva to Iyer ooh, hello THERE! A little shimmy brings him close to the ball, and he has sent this to the roof of the stadium. Smashed over long-on SIX
15.5 4 PWH de Silva to Iyer length, and he slog sweeps this and gets it to the deep mid-wicket fence, What Kohli might have been looking to do off the first ball FOUR
15.4 1 PWH de Silva to Kohli length, driven towards long-off 1 run
15.3 1 PWH de Silva to Iyer goes back to a slider, and plays it firmly towards long-on 1 run
15.2 4 PWH de Silva to Iyer Iyer is able to get under the ball, and flog it towards long-off. Raw power, once he got to the pitch of that with a little stretch forward FOUR
15.1 1 PWH de Silva to Kohli Hasaranga’s first ball back is met with a fierce swipe down towards deep mid-wicket. Would have wanted to get under that 1 run
End of Over No.15 India 104/2 Last Over (5 runs)

Vinayak: “Debayan, you are missing the point. The crowd was obviously senseless. They can’t hope for one of our own to be dismissed, even if it brings best player on to the field. That is not right in any era” — I’d go further to suggest that the crowd should have the right to root for any player of any team. Most professionals tend to take the crowd out of the equation anyway. Don’t worry about their feelings

14.6 1 Shanaka to Kohli slower ball, and he moves across to take it from around off, and whip it towards deep mid-wicket. Wants two for it, but the fielder is fast to converge on this 1 run

PrashB: “For most people, it’s once in a lifetime opportunity watching Kohli bat live in a chase. I watched sachin bat just once and that feeling was ineffable. In india, cricket is a religion.”

14.5 1 Shanaka to Iyer slower ball, outside off, and he swings this towards deep mid-wicket 1 run
14.4 1 Shanaka to Kohli skips down the wicket to drive a length ball down to long-on 1 run
14.3 1 Shanaka to Iyer fuller ball, and he looks to drive. Gets an inside edge, towards short fine leg. They take on the fielder there and get through for a single 1 run
14.2 1 Shanaka to Kohli short, slower ball, and he guides this down towards deep backward square leg 1 run

Zaid: “Any reason why isuru Udana is not bowling he. Has good variations. And can get wickets” — Injured himself while fielding. Hasn’t been on the field, since

14.1 0 Shanaka to Kohli slower ball, around off, and he drives this hard, but fielded by cover no run

Nirav: “I think it’s just a riff on the phrase used for physical objects (“all the money in the world”, for instance). Just BS phrases English commentators used in the 80s and 90s and modern commentators just parrot” — You mean they have no problem whatsover with it?

End of Over No.14 India 99/2 Last Over (6 runs)
13.6 0 Kumara to Iyer ducks under a short one around off and middle no run
13.5 4 Kumara to Iyer shot! Fullish, fast ball, and he just smashes this back down the wicket. If Kumara had gotten a hand to it, he might have either caught this, or injured a finger in his bowling arm FOUR
13.4 0 Kumara to Iyer a bit short of a length, and he defends this towards short mid-wicket no run
13.3 1 Kumara to Kohli short ball, and he plays this away with a roll of the wrists towards deep square leg 1 run

Rohan: “I’m with Remios. It’s bad enough when it happens at a dismissal but during a review is absolutely awful. Don’t think Dhawan cares but Kohli has to be steaming about it. I was at the Wankhede a few weeks back and he was trying to get the crowd to cheer for Shami and Bhuvi instead of him.” — Each era will have these situations, though. Sachin’s teammates might have some stories to tell too!

13.2 1 Kumara to Iyer drives a fuller ball towards long-on 1 run
13.1 0 Kumara to Iyer swift, short, angles in to Iyer, and he is able to keep this down. Takes his bottom hand off, and the ball pops up but lands short of point no run

Malinga holds back one over of Hasaranga, and brings on Kumara instead

Remios: “He’s paid well, sure. You’d hope that isn’t his main drive for playing for his country though. If I were paid millions and heard my countrymen screaming for my head so they could watch the next guy, I’m pretty sure I’d feel conflicted.” — Not so much about the money, but about professionalism. Pretty sure his confilct would be more about why he missed that ball and how he misread it

End of Over No.13 India 93/2 Last Over (5 runs)

Gk: “Watching Iyer and Kohli bat together gives a sense of calm the same as Kohli/Dhoni batting together..”

12.6 1 Malinga to Iyer short ball, slower through the air, and Iyer is able to watchfully run this down to third man 1 run
12.5 0 Malinga to Iyer oh, pinpoint yorker. Iyer does well to keep this out! no run

Nirav: “Does the expression “he had all the time in the world” bother anyone other than me? The world is a “big space” not a “long time”. Time doesn’t add up that way! If you combine a minute all over the world, it is still a minute.” — Maybe “world” in a more philosophical sense?

12.4 1 Malinga to Kohli shorter, and he goes outside of the line of this with a neat, little shuffle, and gets it down to fine leg 1 run

With ten nearly equally matched groups, the importance of every game can’t be understated in this tournament. Contemplating that the 2 sides on newspaper,Sri Lanka are somewhat more power-packed unit whereas India possess the benefit of being a steady side.
