Ball by Ball Live Score Commentary

End of Over No.36 New Zealand 132/3 Last Over (3 runs)

Thanks for joining us. This has been a riveting series that well and truly justifies the scoreline. India have been thoroughly outplayed, but they had their moments. On that note, this is Shashank Kishore signing off on behalf of Sidharth Monga.

Kane Williamson: “Fairly supporting surfaces, you could create opportunities throughout. History suggests it does a bit initially and flattens out. 30s and 40-run partnership was huge on this surface. A fantastic series from out side, the way we stuck at it. It’s a fine line, India are a world class side, a great effort. Jamieson an exciting talent, contributed very well in both games. The runs he scored towards the back end of both games were incredibly valuable. These two games are opportunities for us to try and take steps forward. Looking to finish off the season on a high.

Kyle Jamieson is Man of the Match “Surreal couple of weeks, just to be part of the group and win a couple of matches feels good. Pitch conditions obviously help and trying to find the fuller length and making decisions more often about the length and sometimes natural variations take over. It’s certainly time that I work on a lot on my batting, especially batting lower down the order. In both Tests the partnerships down the order have made a difference. Having had a small taste of Test cricket, it’s important to work on things and come back better.”

Tim Southee is Man of the series for his 14 wickets.

Virat Kohli: “It was a matter of not having enough intent in the first game, and not closing out here. We didn’t bowl in the right areas for long enough. They created a lot of pressure. It was a combination of us not executing well enough and New Zealand sticking to their plans. The batsmen didn’t do enough for the bowlers to try and attack. The bowling was good, I thought even in Wellington we bowled well. Sometimes if you bowl well and things don’t happen, you have to take it in your stride. Disappointing, have to go back to the drawing board and correct things going forward. Toss, you could think about it being a factor, but we don’t complain. It did give extra advantage to the bowlers in each Test but as an international side, you’re expected to understand that. We accept it upfront and if we have to win away from home, we have to do that. No excuses, just learning moving forward. In Tests, we weren’t able to play the cricket we wanted to.”

3.50pm India have been humbled inside three days, but victory didn’t look so straightforward at this time yesterday. New Zealand had a significant chunk of the deficit to wipe out with the lower order, and Kyle Jamieson delivered with a counter-attacking 49 to restrict India’s lead to just seven runs. Then Boult and Southee got into the thick of things to wrap up India’s second innings early, before their openers struck half-centuries to seal the win.

New Zealand took 47 minutes to take the four remaining wickets and then their openers made the 132-run target look easier than it was in conditions that continued to be torturous for the batsmen. The depth in New Zealand’s five-man seam attack outshone India’s three-man party, which was missing Ishant Sharma and also had to do with an injured Mohammed Shami in the second innings.

35.6 1 Jadeja to Nicholls works this down to long-on. That’s the Test and the series for New Zealand. 120 points into the kitty. They win the series 2-0. What a reversal from the T20I whitewash. New Zealand bounced back to take the ODIs 3-0 and now the Tests 2-0. The win also takes NZ to second in the ICC Test rankings 1 run
35.5 0 Jadeja to Nicholls works this off a length to midwicket no run
35.5 1 Jadeja to Nicholls has he nicked this? Jadeja furiously signals for a review. Shaped to cut, this skidded through. Okay, looks like Jadeja has overstepped so whatever happens after that is immaterial 1 no ball
35.4 0 Jadeja to Nicholls punched to cover no run
35.3 0 Jadeja to Nicholls works this to midwicket no run
35.2 0 Jadeja to Nicholls gets well forward and smothers this no run
35.1 1 Jadeja to Taylor paddled to fine leg 1 run
End of Over No.35 New Zealand 129/3 Last Over (4 runs)
34.6 0 Kohli to Nicholls gentle swing away from outside off, left alone no run
34.5 0 Kohli to Nicholls gets well forward and blocks no run
34.4 4 Kohli to Nicholls floated full and wide, Nicholls goes after that and slices it over point FOUR
34.3 0 Kohli to Nicholls nice and full on off, pushed to mid-off no run
34.2 0 Kohli to Nicholls pulls this one bounce to midwicket. Looked to hit too hard no run

Pant standing up to the stumps

34.1 0 Kohli to Nicholls wayward, wayward. Left alone. no run

Kohli tp bowl his gentle seam-ups

End of Over No.34 New Zealand 125/3 Last Over (4 runs)

Dave: “Cricinfo commentators are always subconsciously biased towards India. It’s not unreasonable. One always would like to see one’s country win. ” — Absolutely not true, Dave.

33.6 0 Yadav to Taylor right forward as he defends no run

praveengadugin: “By the way, I just came to watch, What happened to Shami? why isn’t he bowling?” — BCCI’s line: “Mohammed Shami suffered a ball impact injury while batting. He is receiving treatment for the same and is currently off the field.”

33.5 0 Yadav to Taylor pushes this firmly to mid-off no run
33.4 4 Yadav to Taylor pulled away, no one at deep square. Runs now down to single digits. FOUR
33.3 0 Yadav to Taylor straightens off the seam, defended back no run
33.2 0 Yadav to Taylor turns this full delivery on middle and leg to square leg no run
33.1 0 Yadav to Taylor pushed to cover no run
End of Over No.33 New Zealand 121/3 Last Over (5 runs)
32.6 0 Bumrah to Nicholls angles in a full ball on the stumps, defended no run
32.5 W Bumrah to Blundell the off-stump is flattened! What a ball from Bumrah. Now, now. Can only wonder what if they had another 80 runs to play with. This ball wickedly comes back in from outside off, skids through to beat Blundell’s half-hearted forward push. This is very, very close to being a no-ball though. The umpire is having a look at the point of landing. Is the heel behind the line? I think there is nothing. Even if there is, I can’t see it. Let’s see what the third umpire thinks. Okay, he’s been given out, millimetres. OUT
TA Blundell b Bumrah 55 (143m 113b 8×4 1×6) SR: 48.67
32.4 4 Bumrah to Blundell cover driven with disdain. This was full and he simply flayed that away FOUR
32.3 0 Bumrah to Blundell right behind the line as he defends this back down the pitch no run
32.2 1 Bumrah to Taylor works this to square leg 1 leg bye
32.1 0 Bumrah to Taylor lifter from wide of the crease, Taylor on the hop as he defends no run
End of Over No.32 New Zealand 116/2 Last Over (4 runs)
31.6 0 Yadav to Blundell turns this length ball on middle to the leg side no run
31.5 0 Yadav to Blundell defends this full delivery with soft hands no run

Abinash Das: “The difference in this series is not only the batting but the bowling failing to create in roads at crucial junctures. Sometimes the opening stands and sometimes the tail ender effort continued to hurt India.” — Clearly you didn’t watch a ball yesterday

31.4 4 Yadav to Blundell punched behind point to get to a half-century, wonderful innings FOUR
31.3 0 Yadav to Blundell overbalanced as this angles in to hit the pad as he tries to work it to the leg side, but would’ve comfortably missed leg no run
31.2 0 Yadav to Blundell shapes away a hint, nicely defended no run

Tom: “All these people are commenting about India’s faults during this series, but no one is commenting about the brilliant way that the Black Caps have carried themselves throughout the ODI Series and Test series. To go from an 8-match losing streak, to winning 5 matches in a row against the number 1 team in the world. Even with the home advantage that is a tremendous turn around from the men in black.”
