End of Over No.41 New Zealand 187/10 Last Over (7 runs)

Right, on that retro (and surreal, overall) note, it’s goodbye from the SCG for the moment. Lots of developments happening around the world of cricket, rapid ones too, so keep following ESPNcricinfo for all the latest updates on what is going on. This is Debayan Sen, on behalf of M Venkat Raghav and Varun Shetty, as well as our colleagues in Australia who will be sending in their analysis pieces and reports for this match, saying goodbye for the moment. Do join us for the second ODI, also from Sydney, on Sunday. Until then, stay safe and follow the game with us.

Mert : “Retro kits today also bringing back memories of old ODI scores when 250 on the board used to be good enough. ”

9.40pm Match presentation by spidercam, gets underway. Aaron Finch:”I thought 250 was a good total. Our bowlers bowled really well. The opening partnership was nice. We both had our challenges adjusting to the slowness of the wicket. You had to pick up the balls you wanted to go through with.” Kane Williamson: “It was a tough wicket, and they had above par with 250. That opening partnership gave them a bit of momentum, and some handy contributions down the order. With their top-class bowling, they were always going to make it challenging. For us, it was about small margins. We have to bowl better lines. It looked like a slow surface, and might offer help for the spinners, which our spinners did very well.” Mitchell Marsh is the Man of the Match. “We were really disappointed with the results in South Africa. We were pumped to get out there and get a win today. I don’t think this was a 300 wicket, to be honest, but they batted really well at the start and set us up beautifully. 250 proved to be too much in the end.”

Nirmal : “Ah! am reminded of the good ole days of ODI cricket when 250 definitely won you a game!” —- Don’t mind these matches one bit, myself

JB: “@Dave – are you forgetting that Australia have just lost 3-0 to South Africa at home? Winning away isn’t exactly a walk in the park. Plus, you might want to check those ratings on the players you’ve just openly trashed.”

Robert Lamb: “Well said Jake. Definitely not out-classed. I’d pick many of the NZ players over the Aussies – more a mental thing. The Black Caps play crap against Australia.”

Dave: “Those rankings are wrong. If Starc played the majority of his matches in NZ he would be well ahead of Boult. He has always outperformed him in NZ conditions. Even the 2015 world cup qualifier. Not arrogance, just fact.”

9.30pm Australia have been terrific. They needed their bowlers to come to the party, after New Zealand pulled things back significantly with the ball themselves. The teams now meet along the boundary, and just clap around each other. No handshakes, as part of the precautions around the Coronavirus. Australia got off to a flier today, but New Zealand were yanked back in the game by their bowlers. Particularly the spin bowling of Mitchell Santner, who married economy with wickets and pushed Australia back. The hosts owed posting 258 on the board to a smart half-century from Marnus Labuschagne, but one would have thought New Zealand would have enough in their reserves to chase this down.

That was not to be, as the Australian pacers set the ball rolling with some stingy opening spells to peg New Zealand back. There was one early wicket, that of Henry Nicholls, but the barn doors were really flung open when Adam Zampa got a wrong’un to fizz through the defence of Kane Williamson. Tom Latham and Colin de Grandhomme briefly raised visions of a remarkable comeback, but Latham’s dismissal led to a pretty early demise of the Kiwi fightback.

40.6 W Cummins to Boult short, off the top edge, and Cummins calls it. And he takes it as well, right by Boult! Fist bump from the batsman, and Cummins completes part of what has been a complete and professional performance OUT
TA Boult c & b Cummins 5 (4b 1×4 0x6) SR: 125.00
40.5 0 Cummins to Boult shuffles across to the off, and then backs away to confuse Cummins, who fires it in around his toes. Defended out towards short mid-wicket no run
40.4 1 Cummins to Sodhi fuller ball, and Sodhi is able to work this away towards fine leg 1 run

Jake: “@Dave. Its a mental block for NZ playing Australia. Outclassed is arrogant. Boult, Ferguson and Henry are ranked higher than Starc and Hazelwood. Guptil, Taylor and Williamson are higher than Smith… ”

40.3 1 Cummins to Boult shuffles across to expose his stumps, and Cummins bangs it in short outside off. He runs this towards third man 1 run
40.2 4 Cummins to Boult short, and he backs away, looking to smack this down the ground. Off the top edge, and just clears a diving Carey to his left, and runs down to fine leg! FOUR
40.1 1 Cummins to Sodhi starts with a short ball, and he runs this down towards third man 1 run

Cummins

IG: “Umpires struggling to hear the knicks with such a noisy crowd…”

End of Over No.40 New Zealand 180/9 Last Over (7 runs)
39.6 W Marsh to Ferguson Marsh hits the top of off! Length, and the line just enough to hit the stumps, and that sums up how well Australia have bowled to a plan. Not much room, nor enough length to hit through or across the line. Ferguson goes for an almighty heave, and just hears the rattle of the ball brush the bail on its way through OUT
LH Ferguson b Marsh 1 (7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 14.28

David: “Yes, the last time New Zealand won here they required the help of a lottery, Hobart, wicket. One that was making popgun Tassie bowlers look good in the Shield. NZ were thoroughly outclassed in the matches on good wickets in that series too.”

39.5 1 Marsh to Sodhi fuller ball on the leg stump, and he pummels this towards deep mid-wicket 1 run
39.4 4 Marsh to Sodhi oh, that’s an interesting shot to get four with! Sodhi backs away, Marsh follows him with a yorker. Sodhi gets some bat on it and runs it to the right of Carey, who had started moving to his left FOUR
39.3 0 Marsh to Sodhi slower ball, around off, and he looks to biff this away, but misses no run

Steve: “Fair call about Aussie dominance in cricket @james, but the universe has to find some way of balancing out All Black dominance” —- You cannot see me, Steve, but that calls for a standing ovation

39.2 1 Marsh to Ferguson length, angles in to him, and he plays this away towards square leg 1 run
39.1 1 Marsh to Sodhi fuller ball, and Sodhi is able to squeeze this away towards fine leg 1 run
End of Over No.39 New Zealand 173/8 Last Over (2 runs)

This just in: Following the suspension of the majority of domestic football leagues in Europe, UEFA has also taken the unprecedented step of suspending the Champions League and Europa League due to the coronavirus outbreak.

38.6 0 Hazlewood to Ferguson fuller, driven to mid-on no run
38.5 0 Hazlewood to Ferguson gets his reward, or does he? No reviews for Australia left. Short ball, and Ferguson looks to pull. It definitely hits something on its way through to Carey. That’s come off the top of the bat, surely? Not given by umpire Erasmus no run

Hazlewood was outstanding with the new ball today. Laid the foundation for this terrific bowling effort

38.4 0 Hazlewood to Ferguson shorter, and he goes back and looks to thwack this over mid-wicket. Goes over his bat no run

james: “”Marsh, perhaps the unsung hero of today’s Australian performance” I knew this was gonna be commentators curse, not IF but WHEN it was going to happen. Still hilarious I always love commentators curses” —- Occupational hazard!

38.3 0 Hazlewood to Ferguson fuller, driven down towards mid-on no run

Nelson : “It seems to me that New Zealand always loses in Australia no matter what format. When was the last time they won there?” — I think it was the Hobart Test of 2011

38.2 0 Hazlewood to Ferguson length, down the leg side again, but this time off the thigh pad as he shapes to glance no run
38.1 1 Hazlewood to Sodhi short, and he shuffles across and flicks this towards square leg 1 run
38.1 1 Hazlewood to Sodhi slides down the leg side 1 wide
End of Over No.38 New Zealand 171/8 Last Over (4 runs)

27 vital runs late in the batting order, and six overs for 22 runs, taking two wickets, here for Mitchell Marsh

37.6 1 Marsh to Sodhi fuller ball, and he whips this away towards square leg 1 run

Here’s Lockie Ferguson

Dave: “Not gutless, Hax, just outclassed. When you look at the two sides, Australia has three bowlers who are better than any of the New Zealand bowlers (none who would make a full strength NSW side) and four of the top five batsmen in the match. What result would you expect?”

37.5 W Marsh to Santner Marsh has another one! Length ball, and just holds up a bit in the pitch. Not a particular change of pace, but he looks to go over long-on, but ends up playing down his throat. Perhaps timed it a bit too well, but with batsmen running out at the other end, Santner perhaps thought he needed to be the one chancing his arm a bit more OUT
MJ Santner c Cummins b Marsh 14 (16b 1×4 0x6) SR: 87.50

Sukrit Gupta: “This is kind of similar to the group stage match between the two teams during last year’s World Cup” —- They are in retro kits

37.4 1 Marsh to Sodhi fuller ball, and he drives this through the extra cover region to the sweeper in the deep 1 run

Greg T: “The lack of a crowd hasn’t made the slightest difference to me…following the match right here…”

37.3 1 Marsh to Santner length, taps this wide of cover, and takes a quick single 1 run
37.2 1 Marsh to Sodhi shuffles across and flicks this towards deep square leg 1 run
37.1 0 Marsh to Sodhi length, just around off, and he is beaten by one that keeps low no run

Marsh, perhaps the unsung hero of today’s Australian performance

End of Over No.37 New Zealand 167/7 Last Over (5 runs)

James: “@Harry yeah i agree dont write NZ off, boult’s gonna get a half century and finish the win off”

Hax: “Gutless batting once again, the buck falls on Guptill, too many dot balls forced the other batsmen to take risks, the bowling was good sure, but that should be no excuse. A quality ODI batsmen should be able to rotate the strike at the very least”

36.6 4 Hazlewood to Santner walks across and smacks a short ball from outside off towards deep mid-wicket. Terrific shot! FOUR
36.5 0 Hazlewood to Santner smashed back hard, and it hits the stumps at the non-striker’s end. No hand to it, otherwise Sodhi would have been run out backing up! no run

Those wickets have meant the runs are again coming in just a trickle

36.4 1 Hazlewood to Sodhi shuffles across and works this off his hips towards fine leg 1 run

Tucks: “Each batsmen left needs to double their average now and NZ win the game…..”

Daniel: “I’m not usually even a fan of the crowd, I get annoyed with the noise and the drums and the Mexican waves. But this is really tough viewing without it, just totally flat, no atmosphere.”

36.3 0 Hazlewood to Sodhi length, and he defends after getting behind the line of this, around off no run

Harry: “NZ still have their best batsman to come, Mr Boult, don’t write em off yet”

36.2 0 Hazlewood to Sodhi length, angles in, and he shuffles across and defends no run
